The Radius TBI Story of
Support and awareness
Let’s dive into the inspiring story of how Radius TBI came to be. A journey driven by real-life experiences and an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those affected by traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
Radius TBI Story
How it all began
The story begins with Jessica, a dedicated medical assistant who is highly respected by her colleagues and doctors. However, everything changed one fateful day when she was involved in a car accident that left her with a seemingly minor head injury – a T-bone collision that jolted her head against the side window. Little did she know that this incident would mark the beginning of a life-altering journey.
After the accident, Jessica underwent a thorough examination, including a brain CT scan and X-rays at a nearby hospital. Thankfully, the results did not reveal any alarming issues, such as a brain bleed. However, what went unnoticed was the presence of a concussion, either undiagnosed or underdiagnosed.
Over the next few months, Jessica sought help from various specialists, including orthopedics and neurosurgeons, and diligently underwent physical therapy for her neck and back injuries. But there was a critical aspect of her condition that remained overlooked – her concussion.
With tears in her eyes, she confessed,
"Something is not right with me; I don't understand what is happening to me."— Jessica —
Emotionally distressed and struggling with work mistakes, focus, concentration, and memory issues, Jessica finally approached a director at her medical office. With tears in her eyes, she confessed, “Something is not right with me; I don’t understand what is happening to me.” Her personal life crumbled, relationships strained, and the life she once knew slipped away.
In her quest for answers, Jessica faced the harsh reality of limited resources for understanding and treating brain injuries, not just in her local community but globally. This months-long journey led her to a neurologist, but even in that professional setting, there were not much of available resources for a comprehensive concussion/ TBI program. This lack of support left Jessica feeling stranded and helpless.
The scarcity of resources for concussion and brain injuries was not just a local issue but a widespread problem affecting communities worldwide. Recognizing this alarming gap in care, the founder of Radius TBI felt a deep calling to make a difference. Witnessing the struggles of an underserved patient population like Jessica, the founder was inspired to establish Radius TBI with a mission to support and positively impact the community. This marked the beginning of a dedicated effort to address the global challenge of insufficient resources for individuals facing brain injuries.
From Crisis to Commitment: The Evolution of Radius TBI's Lifesaving Mission on Traumatic Brain Injury
Consider someone like Jessica – initially appearing normal, but their condition gradually deteriorates without proper diagnosis and treatment. Forgetfulness, decreased hearing, sleep disturbances, and personality changes become a daily struggle. Irritability, argumentativeness, and emotional outbursts further isolate them from friends and family. Depression, anxiety, and PTSD become constant companions, leading to social withdrawal. Some may even turn to drugs and alcohol as coping mechanisms, further complicating their lives.
This silent epidemic affects individuals who may eventually find themselves homeless or incarcerated. Startling research indicates that a significant percentage of these populations, ranging from 70-80%, have a history of traumatic brain injury. It is this alarming statistic that drives Radius TBI’s mission to raise awareness in the community.
"Know the symptoms, get the facts, and get checked!"
By understanding the symptoms, seeking accurate information, and proactively seeking medical attention, we can collectively address the social and humanitarian consequences of mild traumatic brain injuries and strive towards a healthier, more supportive society.
"TBI is a major cause of death and disability"
There were over 69,000 TBI-related deaths in the United States in 2021.
