Mental Health Counseling for TBI Patients
A traumatic brain injury can affect more than memory, concentration, and physical functioning. Many patients also experience emotional and psychological changes, including anxiety, depression, irritability, difficulty regulating emotions, sleep problems, and challenges adjusting to life after an injury. The CDC recognizes anxiety, depression, irritability, and emotional changes among the potential effects of TBI and concussion.
Research also demonstrates the importance of addressing mental health during TBI recovery. A meta-analysis of more than 100,000 individuals found that people with mild TBI had more than three times the odds of developing depression compared with individuals without mild TBI. Another systematic review and meta-analysis found that individuals experiencing persistent post-concussion symptoms had significantly higher odds of experiencing depressive symptoms.
At Radius TBI, a licensed mental health counselor can be an important part of a patient’s multidisciplinary care team. Counseling can help patients better understand and manage emotional challenges, develop healthy coping strategies, work through anxiety or depression, improve emotional regulation, and adjust to changes in work, relationships, and daily life.
Mental health support is not separate from TBI recovery—it can be an important part of helping patients move forward. At Radius TBI, counseling is integrated with a broader approach to TBI and concussion care, with treatment tailored to each patient’s individual needs and recovery goals.
If you or a loved one has experienced a traumatic brain injury, consider seeking mental health counseling at a specialized center like Radius TBI. Professional counseling can help address anxiety, depression, emotional changes, stress, and the challenges of adjusting to life after TBI as part of a comprehensive recovery plan.
